Acceptability is a decision by GMC

For a medical qualification obtained outside the UK, GMC checks whether it is acceptable before you can sit PLAB or apply for registration. Its guidance distinguishes qualifications it does not accept from those it may accept after assessment.

The relevant European qualification exception should be checked against GMC’s definition. “European” in everyday use is not enough to identify the applicable route.

Verification answers a different question

GMC requires independent verification of certain non-UK qualifications before granting registration. Its guide applies to graduates of medical schools outside the UK who do not already hold provisional registration.

ECFMG, a division of Intealth, verifies authenticity directly with the awarding institution through EPIC. GMC tells applicants to check that the qualification meets its criteria before creating the EPIC account.
