THE DECISION MAKER

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) assesses the foreign nursing qualification and issues the professional licence; a supplementary university programme may be an alternative training route.

THE FIRST FREE CHECK

Read the Board's general-care nurse path for non-EU/EEA education, including the option of starting with qualification assessment or pursuing a university supplementary course.

AVOID THE WRONG REPORT

Do not assume the initial education equivalence assessment permits use of Sweden's protected nurse title or replaces Swedish language and professional licensing requirements.

Short answer

A nurse educated outside the EU/EEA needs a Swedish professional licence issued by Socialstyrelsen. Its standard authority route separates education review, proficiency testing, Swedish rules, clinical training and the final licence.

When this applies

For education outside the EU/EEA the Board offers a five-step authority process or a complementary university programme. The first credential assessment does not require Swedish, but subsequent stages and final licensing need approved language evidence. A person already licensed and experienced in another EU/EEA country may have a different route.

Which document

Nursing diploma/training records and identity information for education assessment, then the separately requested language, proficiency, law, clinical training and registration materials for the selected Socialstyrelsen route.

What this does not do

Only the non-EU/EEA-educated general-care nurse route as described; other nursing roles and EU/EEA recognition paths must be verified separately. The page cannot award a Swedish licence or assess immigration status.

Your next official step

Read the Socialstyrelsen non-EU/EEA nurse page, select whether to investigate its five-step route or an approved supplementary programme, and check the corresponding documentary instructions.

The protected title requires professional licensing

Socialstyrelsen says that practising under the nurse title in Sweden requires a licence. The standard outside-EU/EEA authority process covers an initial education assessment, a proficiency test, Swedish-law study, clinical training and a final licence application. A university complementary programme is another distinct route.

The education-origin distinction matters

The Board's EU/EEA recognition information uses professional-qualification recognition criteria that differ from the non-EU/EEA nursing sequence. It explicitly separates recognition from the professional licence and protected title. Earlier non-EU education followed by an EU professional-practice period can also require a separate Article 3.3 analysis.
