Short answer
Internationally registered nurses on the standard overseas route verify professional documents through TruMerit before applying to the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Who decides
The Nursing Council of New Zealand assesses the qualification and the professional registration application; TruMerit verifies documents but does not decide registration.

When this applies
The Council's standard overseas process requests current overseas registration, nursing education, English competence and relevant clinical experience. Registered nurses holding a current Australian practising certificate are directed to a distinct TTMR route.

Which document
TruMerit-verified identification, nursing qualification and registration information, with language and experience evidence specified by the Council; further fitness and competence assessment may follow.

Avoid the wrong purchase
Do not order a generic NZQA report as a substitute for TruMerit professional verification. The Council's self-assessment is an indication, not final registration approval.

What this does not do
This guide is about internationally registered nurses; current Australian nurse registration, enrolled-nurse changes, and midwifery require separate route checks. It does not promise registration or a job.

Your next official step
Open the Nursing Council's IQN requirements and confirm whether the standard verification route or the Australian TTMR route fits the intended professional application.

Primary verification happens before the Council decides registration
For the general overseas route, the Nursing Council asks internationally qualified nurses to authenticate documents through TruMerit before submitting their registration application. The Council itself reviews equivalence of nursing qualifications and may require competence assessment. Verification and professional registration are distinct decisions.

A separate current-Australian-registration pathway exists
The Council directs nurses with current Australian practising certificates to the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition route, while the general IQN route describes English, registration and practice requirements. The Council's self-assessment gives only a preliminary indication. New enrolled-nurse requirements announced in July 2026 should not be treated as the same as a registered nurse's route.

DiploWay preparation checklist
Before paying, confirm whether you seek registered nurse or enrolled nurse registration, and record all current and historical professional registrations.
Use the Council's original instructions for what the academic institution and prior registration bodies must supply. Verify which stages require experience, competence assessment and English evidence.
Do not confuse immigration IQA results, a nursing verification service, and the Council's actual registration decision.
