New Zealand: NZQA IQA vs Nursing Council registration

An immigration qualification assessment and a nurse's professional registration verification answer different questions. Check the purpose before buying either service.

An IQA may serve a defined immigration qualification requirement

Immigration New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa guidance sets out qualification and work-experience evidence. For certain overseas qualifications below bachelor level used for an AEWV skill condition, an International Qualification Assessment can be relevant, subject to listed exceptions. That is a conditional immigration documentation issue—not a national licence to practise nursing.

The employer's qualification screening is a distinct decision from immigration evidence review.

Nursing Council checks registration and fitness to practise

The Nursing Council of New Zealand is the professional registration authority for nurses. Its general internationally qualified nurse pathway calls for TruMerit verification of specified nursing credentials before the Council reviews a registration application.

The Council separately describes a Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition route for nurses with current Australian registration. The standard international verification flow must not automatically be applied to those applicants.

Neither service substitutes for the other

An immigration IQA does not itself enrol an overseas nurse on the New Zealand professional register. Likewise, TruMerit verification is a document authentication process and does not grant immigration status or final Nursing Council registration.

The conditions depend on the exact nursing category, current registration, and the receiving body's documentation route.

DiploWay three-receivers checklist

Make three columns labelled employer, Immigration New Zealand and Nursing Council. For each, write the precise document named by that recipient.

Confirm whether the Council's general overseas pathway or the Australian mutual-recognition route is the one being investigated. Keep exam, language, registration and immigration questions separate.

Do not buy a generic NZQA assessment as a replacement for the Council's named nurse verification process. This worksheet cannot determine an applicant's eligibility.
