University admission in New Zealand

Ask the receiving institution

THE DECISION MAKER

The receiving university makes its own admission decision for the programme.

THE FIRST FREE CHECK

Check the university's published entry requirements for the country and qualification, then the programme and English-language rules.

AVOID THE WRONG REPORT

Do not purchase a general NZQA IQA merely because the qualification was earned overseas; confirm the university's precise evidence request first.

Short answer

Ask the intended New Zealand university to assess the qualification for the specific programme; a generic credential comparison is not the admission decision.

When this applies

At Auckland, overseas secondary qualifications are assessed against admission, programme and English requirements. Otago publishes its own foreign-qualification entrance criteria. Other universities may differ.

Your next official step

Universities publish different entry tests

The University of Auckland sets overseas secondary entry criteria in addition to programme and language requirements. Otago provides its own international entrance requirements by country or qualification. Neither institution's admission page makes a generic external IQA a blanket prerequisite for everyone applying to university in New Zealand.

Identify the exact degree programme and institution, then compare the institution's requirements with the awarding-country and qualification record you actually hold.

Ask the receiving admissions office which transcripts, certificates and translations it wants before ordering any assessment. Admission, immigration qualification assessment and professional registration are separate purposes.
