Canada architects: CACB ECA vs professional academic certification

CACB's IRCC immigration ECA and professional architecture Academic Certification are different decisions, neither of which is a licence to practise.

Sources checked 2026-10-14 (UTC date)

A Canadian immigration ECA is not an architecture licence

CACB issues an ECA for a defined IRCC immigration evidence purpose. CACB explicitly says that the ECA is not valid for professional or academic certification and does not allow architectural practice.

Only IRCC determines immigration programme eligibility and document acceptance.

Professional education certification is a different CACB service

CACB Academic Certification assesses professional architecture education against the Canadian Education Standard. Eligible certification is an educational foundation before other internship, examination and provincial registration requirements.

The original professional qualification and academic certification mode matter; a degree title alone does not settle the route.

Both documents stop before the final professional decision

An academic certification is not an architect licence and an immigration ECA is not academic certification. CACB identifies possible alternative routes for experienced foreign architects, which must be checked separately.
